Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Grows in Brooklyn |
 |
If you looked closely at the monsters, witches, and Incredibles at the Park Slope Halloween parade, you may have noticed something new: many were carrying bright orange boxes and trick-or-treating for UNICEF. With support and encouragement from Brooklyn Parents for Peace, several new schools including P.S. 321 and P.S. 107 joined our UNICEF campaign and distributed boxes and literature to the kids.
Members of Brooklyn Parents for Peace welcomed children who filled their UNICEF boxes at large, bright orange collection boxes along the parade route. The next day we wheeled the coins to Astoria Federal Savings and Loan, our partner in the campaign, for counting. We then sent the check for nearly $1,000 to UNICEF half of which went to victims of Hurricane Katrina. Children also brought their boxes to school for counting or sent the money directly to UNICEF. By trick-or-treating for UNICEF, they learned they could make a difference and help children around the world.
The Brooklyn Parents for Peace UNICEF campaign will be entering its 3rd year in 2006. Designed to build international awareness while raising money for children's health and education, we reach out to schools, merchants and neighbors encouraging their participation.
Plans for the 2006 campaign are underway. If you are interested in helping, please contact us at unicef@brooklynpeace.org.
