Not One More Death! Not One More Day! Not One More Lie!
A YEAR AGO WE MARCHED AGAINST AN UNNECESSARY WAR IN IRAQ. TODAY WE ARE MARCHING AGAIN against that war and against the occupation of Iraq. We urge you to join us and protesters around the globe in a call for peace and social justice.
WE ARE MARCHING to protest the American occupation of Iraq, which will never bring either peace or democracy to that country. The presence of 130,000 American troops on the ground is a stimulus to anger and resistance, while the Coalition Provisional Authority is daily violating the Iraqi "self-determination" it claims to support. The promise of Iraqi sovereignty on June 30 is an empty one, as the Bush Administration plans to keep in power the political leaders it appointed and to station a large occupation army in Iraq for the indefinite future. We call for the United Nations to supervise a rapid political transition in which elections are held later this year. We call on the United States to fund reconstruction in Iraq.
WE ARE MARCHING because Iraq has become a symbol of American unilateralism and militarism around the globe. This broad policy is costly and unwise. It drains our treasury, diverts attention and money from domestic issues, curbs our basic freedoms, and fails to increase the security of Americans or our allies.
WE ARE MARCHING because the war in Iraq is part of a far-reaching assault on fundamental liberties at home and abroad. The Bush Administration has been overtly contemptuous of the basic foundations of democracy by lying to Congress and the public about the reasons for war, violating the right of habeas corpus for both American citizens and the POWs held by our government in Guantanamo, Afghanistan and Iraq, and invoking the Patriot Act to enhance governmental powers of surveillance and detention.
WE ARE MARCHING to make our opposition to the war and occupation known both to Bush in the White House and Kerry on the campaign trail.
WE ARE MARCHING because each time we walk together with friends and family from our communities, we feel a renewed sense of hope.
WE ARE MARCHING to express solidarity with people around the globe who are protesting war and occupation, protesting empire, and defending the rule of law, diplomacy, human rights, democracy and social justice.
