Getting The Department of Defense Out Of The Department Of Education |
|
In NYC high schools, military recruiters' access to classrooms, the halls, cafeterias etc. is controlled by each school's principal. While we do not believe that military recruiting is consonant with good educational practice, at the very least, military recruiters should not have special access to students, and we need the City Council to pass an appropriate bill
We support Intro 0246-2006, a bill recently introduced in the New York City Council by eight members. The Brooklyn sponsors are Councilmembers Barron, Clarke and James. Other sponsors are Foster, Jackson, Mark-Viverito, Mendez, Palma and White.
If your City Council member is not co-sponsoring Intro 234, please contact the member to urge support.
We support the New York City Peace Zone, a coordinated effort of many New York City peace groups to coordinate and enhance local organizing, and to have City government take an active stand to oppose the War in Iraq. The Peace Zone has four major elements
- Getting New York City government on record calling for an immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, as called for by Res.
- Getting the military out of our schools
- Divesting City pension funds of their holdings of notorious war profiteer Halliburton Corp.
- Having the City and State government provide meaningful support for veterans
